About the disease
Pancreatitis
A complex inflammatory disorder which is becoming a rising global challenge.
The Disease Spectrum
Acute Pancreatitis
An acute inflammatory process of the pancreas with variable involvement of regional tissues and remote organ systems. May resolve completely or progress to severe systemic inflammation, organ dysfunction and life-threatening complications.
Recurrent Acute Pancreatitis
Repeated inflammatory episodes with continuing morbidity and the potential for disease progression.
Chronic Pancreatitis
A chronic inflammatory disease characterised by fibrosis and destruction of exocrine pancreatic tissues. Progressive pancreatic damage associated with persistent pain, exocrine insufficiency, diabetes, malnutrition and impaired quality of life.
Patients may move across these stages over the course of disease, requiring coordinated expertise across gastroenterology, critical care, surgery, endoscopy, radiology, nutrition, pain management and long-term follow-up.
The unanswered challenge
Despite advances in diagnosis & acute management
Important questions remain
Can recurrent attacks be prevented?
Can progression to chronic disease be altered?
Which patients are most vulnerable to recurrent or progressive disease?
What roles do genetics, metabolism, nutrition, sleep & lifestyle play?
How can real-world clinical observations be investigated scientifically?
From acute episodes to
Long-Term Disease Trajectories
The challenge is not limited to treating an individual attack. It extends to understanding recurrence, progression, complications, quality of life and long-term disease management.
The Need for an Integrative Approach
Better outcomes may come from combining:
Symptom Management
Lifestyle Strategies
Psychiatry
Evidence-based Interventions from other medical systems
Nutrition & Metabolic Health
